Indian Christian Theology, like the pluralistic religious background of India itself, is an extraordinary rich mix. Its literature is enormous, ranging from the ancient Syrian Orthodox Tradition, said to date from the time of the Apostles, to the vibrant voices of the Dalits (meaning 'oppressed'; those with the most menial and degrading jobs). Adivasis or tribal peoples, and women, who between them make up the great majority of Indian Christians and are presenting new and distrubing challenges to the mainly Western-based theology of Church leadership that evolved in the past four or five centuries.
